vessels
The vessel as a symbol of container (as well as that which is contained) continues to be an important theme in my work. From humble cups to larger, more sculptural forms and vases, each vessel draws on inspiration from the living world around us.
In alchemy, the Hermetic vessel, completely round or egg-shaped, symbolises the cosmos. My exploration and research through the creative journey has led me to the notion of vessel as metaphorical womb; a container, reflecting the world, that might allow elements of the self to come into being.
These vessels are in a perpetual conversation with the magickal intersections on and in the earth. For my ancestors these are the 'thin places', liminal spaces where worlds meet. These intersections are found at the shoreline where water meets the resonant body of the land, in the cave where overland meets the undisclosed underground and at the horizon where air and space stretch over earth body. We recognise these wild places as significant sites of power. Here we can experience the profound connection and potential transformation that human beings have instinctively recognised, gravitated towards and revered across endless time.
